Blanket being used

Here is a picture of Belle enjoying the quilt I whipped up.

Our dogs aren't spoiled are they???

One day

I needed a quick project that I could complete in one day. This little cuddle blanket did just that for me.

I love the frog fabric, and yes there are hidden Mickey's!

It doesn't have to have Disney fabric to be infused with Disney magic.

DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress #3…..Ready for a New Home

DreamTeamLogoAfter much toiling and sweating and some cursing, The Mickey Mouse Dream Team Quilt has been completed.

I thought it would be fun to provide you a bit of information about the quilt.  So here is it by the numbers:

  • Number of Hours Spent Piecing and Quilting:  150
  • Number of Yards of fabric used:  30
  • Number of Yards of Thread used (approxiametly):  2200
  • Cost of labor if quilting services had been paid for:  $25/hour
  • Number of Hidden Mickeys:  ?? (That’s for the owner to find out)

It should also be noted that all cotton fabric and batting was used on this quilt.

DSC_5686As the final post about the creation of this quilt, I thought it would be fitting to provide in Enchanted Rose’s own words why she is doing this for the Auction:

I have a nephew named Collin Presley who has very special needs.  He has a very rare medical condition called trichothiodystrophy.

Collin is a Disney fanatic to the core!  He is also a Make-A-Wish kid.  He was offered a trip to Walt Disney World, but my sister was too concerned to have him that far from his medical team, so he was granted an alternate wish.  He is at Disneyland at least once a week though and loves his experiences.

There is nothing like seeing this child, who is constantly in pain, belly laughing at the floats in the Electric Light Parade at Disney’s California Adventure or smiling when he feels the wind in his face on Dumbo.

My sister’s blog rarely has a weekly post that does not include at least one trip to Disneyland.

I am more than happy to construct this quilt that will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America in honor of my very own Make-Wish family member.

DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress #2

DreamTeamLogo Well, my wife has been really busy with life and such and asked me to blog another teaser post of her fantastic quilt that she is making for Lou Mongello's Dream Team Auction that takes place at Magic Meets 2008.

So, with no further ado, I present to you.......

The Mickey Mouse Dream Team Auction Quilt!!!

If you cannot find the Mickey Mouse motif running throughout this quilt, you will need to get an appointment with your eye doctor....LOL

All that she has left is to do the quilting and put on the binding (which will be black).

As you can tell, the highlight and centerpiece of this quilt is a giant applique side-profile Mickey which takes up the equivalent of 4 quilt blocks.  The quilt is designed with a color palette to compliment the Mickey Mouse colors (red, black and yellow).FinalPiecedQuiltTop

The final product will hold some quilting details that I hope (and expect) will draw people to the auction table to take a closer look since no photograph will be able to give it due justice.

I'm sure this sucker will be like a giant flashing beacon drawing people over to the Dream Team Auction table at Magic Meets where they can check it out along with the other fabulous items up for bid (some of which are rare not-easily-found collectibles).

Please don't drool too much.

Nancy's quilts are very nice to look at and she feels that this could very well hang on the wall of whoever puts in the winning bid.  But her quilts also make great functional pieces as well.

We actually sleep under a Mickey quilt that she made a few years back.  Since I'm sensitive to synthetic materials, she tries to make the quilts with as much 100% cotton as she can.

That holds true for this quilt as well.  So it will have a cotton batting for the core which translates to some weight to the deceptively thin blanket.

I'm sure Tim Devine can tell you just how heavy the quilt is since my wife made his son, Billy, a crib-sized quilt.  This one is quite a bit bigger and should fit onto a twin bed nicely or make a great cuddle blanket on the couch when you are watching your favorite Disney movie.

So, don't forget to bring your checkbooks cash or credit cards (Disney Visa perhaps!) [edit note:  Pat Whitson just informed me that the following accepted forms of payment are:  Cash, PayPal or Credit Cards via Firstgiving.com (they now take Visa, MC, Amex & Discover)].  There are many wonderful items up for auction this year.  Some are collectibles, some are fun, some are functional.  Wouldn't you love to come home from Magic Meets with an item that can possibly be passed down to family members who share your passion for the Mouse :)

I apologize for the quality of the picture, I was experimenting taking the picture using natural light so the lovely Enchanted Rose (aka Nancy) is holding it up on our back patio.  Since she stands at 5'6", you should get an idea how big this quilt is.

If you click on the photo, it'll take you to a larger version.

EDITED TO ADD:

Pat Whitson, DWT Dream Team Auction Coordinator, has blogged about this entry on the blog she maintains on the DisneyworldTrivia.com website about this fabulous auction.  Check it out:

DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress

DreamTeamLogoThe quilt is underway!

The progress has been impressive even with life getting in the way (have you seen the news about the flu epidemic).

This post is the next installment in the documentation of the project I hope will make a big splash in the Disney community (and raise a little money too).  Grumpy is starting to worry about my ability to part ways with this beautiful work of art and labor of love.  I am truly passionate about quilting and Disney.  It's awesome when great things can be combined in this manner.

This post is truly a teaser though.  Can you guess how these two blocks can mesh into a single project?

A Tale of Two Quilts: Addendum

For those of you who don't follow Tim's profile over at DisFriends, he posted a Journal entry about the quilt my wife, Enchanted Rose, made for his son, Billy.  He also included pictures.  For the curious, check it out....

A TALE OF TWO QUILTS

Finding Nemo Quilt Back in June my nephew Collin (through my sister) invited Tim Devine and his family to join him on the Finding Nemo Submarine ride at Disneyland.  Because of Collin's multiple handicaps, he is unable to wait in line for rides, and the Devine family was able to bypass the four hour wait by accepting his invitation.  Through Collin with his Quiltthis chance meeting my nephew has been able to touch even more lives.  Even though Collin is nonverbal, he has the power to make people remember him and his spirit.  His laugh is contagious and his smile infectious.  Tim has been able to repay the favor five times over through his unique brand of kindness.

One of my latest quilting projects included a first for me.  I made matching Nemo quilts for Collin and Billy Devine to celebrate this occasion.  I don't plan to have any  other two of a kind quilts.  My quilts are  one of a kind creations by nature.  Billy's quilt was finished just hours ago!  I can't wait for Billy to get his belated birthday present, and I hope that this small thank you gives many years of loving warmth.  Collin is already loving all over his quilt.

For the people who are interested in the details:  the fabric for the quilt was purchased at Hancock Fabric and the pattern is the Log Cabin Foldy Stuff.

Sorry George.... no time for the splash mountain quilt.  Already working on the auction quilt :)

Hunting Season 2007

Full Quilt

Princess Panel on Quilt Another successful hunt completed.  Will I display my trophy on the wall?  Will I annoy all of my friends with the endless pictures of the beautiful specimen?

Growing up in rural Oklahoma I was subjected to many post hunting season photographs of the proud hunter and trophy.  We all want to share the products or prizes of a successful hunt.  It is human nature to share what we are most proud of.  Now there is a new outlet for  bragging called blogging.

My latest prize and show piece is a gorgeous (if I do say so myself) Princess Blanket.  I was helped in the fabric selection by my sister-in -law and the geometric configuration Full Panel in Quiltby Grumpwurst himself.  The focus fabric is a licensed Disney print that I purchased at Joann's fabric store along with the coordinating fabric.  Finished size is 63" X 40" which is crib size for this pattern.  The pattern is a Foldy Stuff chevron pattern.  The fabric is actually folded over to give dimension and texture to the finished quilt.

This showpiece already has an intended home with my niece Regan (Collin's sister) in Southern California for Christmas.  Collin's Christmas present is in the works and will be showcased soon.

(Chimpin' ain't easy Tim!)

The Most Beautiful Flowers are not always found in Beautiful Gardens, It's True. (Cinderella)

Baby Quilt - Eeyore SquareThe perfect one is out there!  I know it is.  I keep looking, hoping that the next glance will bring success.  Then it happens!  I find just the perfect one.  It will complete the ensemble and make things work.

Crafting is not just a hobby- it is a hunt.  Which color of paper or which fabric will complete this project?  Will this page be my favorite when I have finished it or will I want to redo it as soon as I place it in the album?

Recently I have discovered that I can combine my passions and have great success.  I love to quilt.  I have been doing it since I was in junior high.  I love to scrapbook.  I have been doing that since I was in college.  I LOVE Disney!  I can’t pinpoint the moment this love affair started, but I think that it was shortly after figuring out what music was.  I have a serious love affair with all of the Disney sound tracks whether movie or otherwise.  (I have decided that I have a great shower voice and love to belt out the songs- Beauty and the Beast particularly.)

Buying crafting supplies is just as much fun for the "hunter" as is putting the project together.  For my quilts, theIMG_0123 main focus fabric has to be perfect to pull all of the other complementing fabrics together.  Texture, fabric type, and color all play a part in the success of any quilt.  With scrapbooking it is pulling the right theme for the page.  This may come from the pictures themselves or even just a great color that pops in the picture.

Above all else- never pay full price!  That is what makes this a true hunt- the stalking phase.  Will my 40% off coupon get here in time?  Will license fabrics be on sale this week?  How much batting really is too much when you want 100% cotton for the entire quilt and quality really matters?  Each week I scour the weekly ads and hold out for just the right combination of coupons and sales.

Sometimes I believe that Grumpwurst thinks this hunt is my favorite part of the whole crafting experience.  My craft room is probably the best evidence in his favor.  The drawers and cabinets are filed with the pieces of the "next project".  We are currently building a new home in which I have a craft room all my own for letting these creative expressions take flight.  Once it is completed I will have to post a picture.

Seeing the completed project is a gratifying experience for me, but the true passion I have is in sharing.  My family has no problem with that!  Most of my sibling’s household’s have at least one Enchanted Rose quilt original.  No real guessing to what my family members get as baby gifts.

It is not a terrible thing for a scrapbooker to have a photographer in the house either.  It's nice when talents can complement each other so nicely. :)  Keep taking those Grumptastic photos and being my wingman in this hunt!
