DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress #3…..Ready for a New Home

DreamTeamLogoAfter much toiling and sweating and some cursing, The Mickey Mouse Dream Team Quilt has been completed.

I thought it would be fun to provide you a bit of information about the quilt.  So here is it by the numbers:

  • Number of Hours Spent Piecing and Quilting:  150
  • Number of Yards of fabric used:  30
  • Number of Yards of Thread used (approxiametly):  2200
  • Cost of labor if quilting services had been paid for:  $25/hour
  • Number of Hidden Mickeys:  ?? (That’s for the owner to find out)

It should also be noted that all cotton fabric and batting was used on this quilt.

DSC_5686As the final post about the creation of this quilt, I thought it would be fitting to provide in Enchanted Rose’s own words why she is doing this for the Auction:

I have a nephew named Collin Presley who has very special needs.  He has a very rare medical condition called trichothiodystrophy.

Collin is a Disney fanatic to the core!  He is also a Make-A-Wish kid.  He was offered a trip to Walt Disney World, but my sister was too concerned to have him that far from his medical team, so he was granted an alternate wish.  He is at Disneyland at least once a week though and loves his experiences.

There is nothing like seeing this child, who is constantly in pain, belly laughing at the floats in the Electric Light Parade at Disney’s California Adventure or smiling when he feels the wind in his face on Dumbo.

My sister’s blog rarely has a weekly post that does not include at least one trip to Disneyland.

I am more than happy to construct this quilt that will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America in honor of my very own Make-Wish family member.

DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress #2

DreamTeamLogo Well, my wife has been really busy with life and such and asked me to blog another teaser post of her fantastic quilt that she is making for Lou Mongello's Dream Team Auction that takes place at Magic Meets 2008.

So, with no further ado, I present to you.......

The Mickey Mouse Dream Team Auction Quilt!!!

If you cannot find the Mickey Mouse motif running throughout this quilt, you will need to get an appointment with your eye doctor....LOL

All that she has left is to do the quilting and put on the binding (which will be black).

As you can tell, the highlight and centerpiece of this quilt is a giant applique side-profile Mickey which takes up the equivalent of 4 quilt blocks.  The quilt is designed with a color palette to compliment the Mickey Mouse colors (red, black and yellow).FinalPiecedQuiltTop

The final product will hold some quilting details that I hope (and expect) will draw people to the auction table to take a closer look since no photograph will be able to give it due justice.

I'm sure this sucker will be like a giant flashing beacon drawing people over to the Dream Team Auction table at Magic Meets where they can check it out along with the other fabulous items up for bid (some of which are rare not-easily-found collectibles).

Please don't drool too much.

Nancy's quilts are very nice to look at and she feels that this could very well hang on the wall of whoever puts in the winning bid.  But her quilts also make great functional pieces as well.

We actually sleep under a Mickey quilt that she made a few years back.  Since I'm sensitive to synthetic materials, she tries to make the quilts with as much 100% cotton as she can.

That holds true for this quilt as well.  So it will have a cotton batting for the core which translates to some weight to the deceptively thin blanket.

I'm sure Tim Devine can tell you just how heavy the quilt is since my wife made his son, Billy, a crib-sized quilt.  This one is quite a bit bigger and should fit onto a twin bed nicely or make a great cuddle blanket on the couch when you are watching your favorite Disney movie.

So, don't forget to bring your checkbooks cash or credit cards (Disney Visa perhaps!) [edit note:  Pat Whitson just informed me that the following accepted forms of payment are:  Cash, PayPal or Credit Cards via Firstgiving.com (they now take Visa, MC, Amex & Discover)].  There are many wonderful items up for auction this year.  Some are collectibles, some are fun, some are functional.  Wouldn't you love to come home from Magic Meets with an item that can possibly be passed down to family members who share your passion for the Mouse :)

I apologize for the quality of the picture, I was experimenting taking the picture using natural light so the lovely Enchanted Rose (aka Nancy) is holding it up on our back patio.  Since she stands at 5'6", you should get an idea how big this quilt is.

If you click on the photo, it'll take you to a larger version.

EDITED TO ADD:

Pat Whitson, DWT Dream Team Auction Coordinator, has blogged about this entry on the blog she maintains on the DisneyworldTrivia.com website about this fabulous auction.  Check it out:

DreamTeam Auction 2008: Quilt Progress

DreamTeamLogoThe quilt is underway!

The progress has been impressive even with life getting in the way (have you seen the news about the flu epidemic).

This post is the next installment in the documentation of the project I hope will make a big splash in the Disney community (and raise a little money too).  Grumpy is starting to worry about my ability to part ways with this beautiful work of art and labor of love.  I am truly passionate about quilting and Disney.  It's awesome when great things can be combined in this manner.

This post is truly a teaser though.  Can you guess how these two blocks can mesh into a single project?

Devine Inspiration #9: MagicMeets 2008 Auction Submission Unveiled

castle-ver3

Tim has just unveiled the picture he is going to send to Pat Whitson for the Dream Team Auction at MagicMeets 2008.

Tim wanted me to let everyone know that this will picture will be presented as a 16x20 printed on canvas.  Yes, you read that correctly, this will be on canvas which means it'll be perfect for that special place on the wall you like to display your Disney Pride!

*** NOTE *** The watermark will not be in the item being auctioned off.

Now it's time for my views on the subject at hand.

I get to see a lot of Tim's work.  In some rare cases, I get to be there when the actual picture is taken.

Those of you who have ever perused Tim's store will know that he has quite an array of pictures with Cinderella's Castle as the subject.  They are all of high quality and beautiful.  In fact, I showcased his Dream Lights photo in my last installment of the Devine Inspiration series.

But, out of all his Cinderella Castle shots, I have to say that this is my favorite.  It may be because it has a striking resemblance to the Thomas Kinkaide giclee print we purchased.  I am also partial to a high quality daytime shot of the castle.

This photo has a non-traditional Point-of-View.  Typically you see photos taken from straight on or from the vicinity of the Rose Garden.  I haven't seen too many photos taken from this angle and that makes it different.  It really reminds you that there is a water element to the castle and with the exception of the "Year of a Million Dreams" flags on the draw bridge, you can almost feel like this wasn't even taken in a Theme Park.

As I was telling Tim on the phone this evening.  I love fireworks just as much as the next guy, and the photo he submitted last year was awesome, but this one just beats last year's submission by a mile.

I would be surprised if this item doesn't need several pages of paper to hold all the bids that are submitted.  Whoever puts in the winning bid for this photo will, in my humble opinion, walk away with something that they'll want to show off with pride.

To Recap:

  • A 16x20 Print
  • On Canvas!
  • Will look grumptastic hanging on your wall

Need I say more?
